For those of you who have never worked in an ice cream shoppe, a malt is a milkshake made with malted milk, a powder composed of evaporated milk, wheat flour, and malted barley. It is added to a normal milkshake prior to mixing.
It was originally added as a health additive, as malted milk was a health food item back in the day, and also used for babies. An enterprising soda jerk invented the drink to add a healthy benefit to a milkshake. However, the taste caught on, and now malted milk is not something easy to find, except in ice cream shoppes.
It adds a creamy texture to milk shakes which can't be replicated. Wonderful. If you're ever so inclined, go to an ice cream shoppe one day with a friend, order two shakes (one a malt), and do a taste test comparison. Either way, it'll be a good day, unless you're lactose intolerant, in which case you can join me in regretting the decision.
